Sindh Doctors Association UK raises £43,000 at Pakistan Flood Relief Fundraising Event – 25th September 2010

Sindh Doctors Association (SDA UK) organised a well attended fundraising event on Saturday 25th September 2010 in Bilston, West Midlands in which Member House of Lords, Lord Nazir Ahmed was the Chief Guest. The SDA President, Dr Nazeer Dahar gave an overview of the charity work currently being undertaken by his organisation in the province of Sindh in the areas of Health and Education. He highlighted the SDA’s collaboration with professionals & civil society activists in Hyderabad Sindh, which has resulted in the formation of umbrella organisation – Sindh Development Association (SDA).
Dr Dahar gave details of flood relief and rehabilitation work being undertaken by SDA & SADA in collaboration with other Pakistan based and International agencies such as Pukar, Red Crescent Society, UNICEF etc.
Lord Nazir Ahmed in his address gave his vivid impressions of his recent visit to flood affected areas of Pakistan, especially Quetta. He eulogised the tremendous efforts and contributions made by people living in Britain including British Pakistanis, Indians and others towards flood relief efforts. Lord Nazir also personally supervised and led the auction of various items including a cricket bat with signatures of Pakistani national cricket team players. He also invited auctioned serving tea for four at House of Lords. The SDA had published a special newsletter which gave details of its charity work as well as its activities with regards to flood relief. Ms Jamila Quraishi MBE from Coventry also made an impassioned appeal.
The event was also attended by Councillor Mohammad Arif & Councillor Mohammad Munir from Walsall. The other important aspect of the event were powerful video and oral presentations made by SDA youth members which included Mashaal Iftikhar, Fatima Iftikhar, Mishaal Noor & Mir Noor. The organisers were able to collect funds to the tune of £43,000.00. The proceeds collected at the fundraising event will be exclusively spent as part of rehabilitation activity in the flood affected areas of Pakistan.
